For more than 40 years, Dr. Virgil Beasley has been enjoying being in “the magnificent life business” as he has successfully assisted people in living more meaningful and wonderful lives. He has extensive experience as a business and life coach, an adviser, a friend, a mentor, and a creativity catalyst. His ability to help both individuals and groups from all walks of life has given Virgil a deep sense of joy and a profound appreciation for life.
Brought up as an only child in rural Oklahoma, Virgil was shy and the subject of extensive bullying from the first grade until the seventh grade. That year, he befriended a ninth grader who played right tackle on the first string football team. Since then, he has continued to befriend bigger and better friends and business mentors who have enriched his life.
Virgil’s father had a profound effect on his life. He often spoke of going to bed hungry and dropping out of school in the seventh grade to work fulltime on the family farm. His work ethic was strong and he led by example. During the harsh winter he hired a person to feed the livestock and took the family to California. There he sought out any kind of job that would pay an honest dollar. Many times that resulted in his picking oranges right beside migrant workers. He frequently said, “Some people always say look up to the stars and dream big. I say walk looking down because on the rough ground of the farm, you never know what you might step on. Stop and kick the rocks cause you never know what pebble of possibility you will find.”
From those humble beginnings, Virgil has become well-credentialed, having earned a B.A. in Sociology, with minors in Economics, Speech, and English (teaching credentials); a Masters in Social Work with an emphasis on Psychiatric Social Work; and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. He is also licensed both as a Marriage Family Child Counselor, and a Clinical Social Worker
Over the years he has started 10 different businesses, seven of which were successful (although he considers all of them successes in terms of lessons learned). He started his first business at the young age of 14. Unable to get work by the hour driving a tractor, he went to a local banker and got a loan for a used tractor and two plows. He then hired two sixteen year olds and successfully contracted by the acre rather than by the hour.
PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND – TRAINING AND CERTIFICATIONS
His public speeches and workshops have been presented internationally. Recent research concludes that many elders are held back by the shackles of frustration, isolation and depression. Still others are eager to move from success to significance. These elder sages are seeking a platform to share their impactful wisdom around the world. His contribution to these issues has been to found Living Well 60 Plus, a 501 (c) (3) Federal Tax Exempt Organization.
Throughout his adult life, Dr. Virgil has been a student and practitioner of dozens of different philosophies and hundreds of methodologies in his search for “the road” to personal development, greater happiness and more success in life. He has been certified in a number of these approaches, including Teaching Clinical Member, Teaching Special Fields Member of the International Transactional Analysis Association, and Master Certified Coach. He is also a founding Board Member of the International Coaching Federation. Active in the National Speakers Association, Virgil served as President of the Greater Los Angeles Chapter and the Board of Directors of the Northern California Chapters of the National Speakers Association.
He trained directly with Dr. Eric Berne, the “Father of Transactional Analysis. Fritz Pearls was Virgil’s first Gestalt trainer, and his first studies in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) were with founder Richard Bandler. He trained one year in Neo-Riekian with Charles Kelly, as well as one year in Rolfing with Ellen Lacks. A few more of his achievements include certification in “Switched on Selling Kinesiology”, and “Switched on Selling Brain Gym®”, Mindfulness studies include Yoga, Meditation with Jack Kornfield (Sprit Rock), Buddhism, Hawaiian and Brazilian Shamanism.
In 1992, Virgil had a spiritual “Ah Ha” that he now considers a gift. He was the unfortunate recipient of a diagnosis of esophageal rupture, also known as Boerhaave’s Syndrome, leaving him with only a 30% chance of survival when taken into surgery. On the fourth night post-surgery, he saw and heard angels who told him, “You are alive, and need to be alive for Carol. Heal in peace and get on with your journey of loving fully and you will matter to many.” Following two weeks in the hospital, six months on disability, and losing two businesses, he began to search for a full time job for the first time in 25 years. Three months later he landed the position of Director of Training for the Federal Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles, California.
LEMONS TO LEMONADE
He and his wife lost their home in the Northridge earthquake fifteen months later.
Three months after the earthquake, he terminated himself from the Bankruptcy Court. He had developed a coaching program that included the staff detailing their deficiencies and plans for improvement. He was then mandated not to inform the staff of forthcoming plans to downsize. He considered this treatment of the staff unethical as they were being asked to provide information that could be used in termination decisions.
It is Virgil’s belief that he was not gifted the extension of his life to compromise his values, to knowingly be part of harming others.
He submitted his resignation.
He was without full time work. Rebuilding their home was not a option as the pre earthquake value for the home could not be recovered for many years. Knowing that they would land back on their feet, they moved 65 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge to a location of their shared dreams.
They went to Viticulture classes for two years, planted a three and one half acre Zinfandel grape vineyard which Virgil farms and from which he makes award winning wine. Their 3000 foot barn has a finished upstairs Yoga, Workshop, Video and Fundraising room. They also have an upscale vacation home rental, www.grape-escape.net . He enjoys time with his wife, their dog, and involvement in community affairs.
He now lives his life for the purpose of being of contribution to others. Those he touches have a partner who has been there himself; to discover their path in life; to kindle their desires to live their dreams; to grow their confidence and take purposeful action; to live fulfilled lives as they produce the results they want.
He still has this guiding wisdom from Dr. Eric Berne framed on his wall in front of his computer:
“There is no friend like an old friend.
The sooner you make a new friend,
The sooner you have an old friend.”
Thanks to Virgil, many people can say, “I now live my life legacy each day.”
