Our guest was happily finishing up the last of her beef stew my wife had prepared for our dinner guests. She commented about how enjoyable the potatoes had been.
My wife then told her it was rutabaga. She had thought and then forgot to inform the guests that we were not eating carbohydrates and had left out potatoes and added vegetables to the recipe.
This, I thought, was a great ‘teaching moment’.
“Sandy, do you recall when we celebrated Carol’s birthday in Mendocino and the great meal and dancing we shared together? When you had not wanted to taste escargot because of how they looked and they were disgusting snails? And I told you a story of how I was once on KTLA,TV in Los Angeles demonstrating the “Fast Phobia Cure”? And at the end of my story, I told you the essence of the cure was to blend a negative or disturbing memory with a pleasant experience?”
While asking her these questions I purposefully scanned/made intermittent eye contact with the other guests while concentrating on Sandy.
“Recall I then encouraged you to taste some of the butter sauce, just the butter sauce from my escargot on a piece of bread. ‘Tell us exactly what you are tasting and tell us what pleasant associations come up for you.’ I then suggested you sample a second piece of bread, this time the heal, dipped in the butter sauce. You noticed the crunchy texture right away and liked it very much.”
“I then offered you a third sample, this time with the sauce and a small piece of escargot with the suggestion you concentrate on the crunchy texture as you recalled how great the previous sample was.”
“To your surprise and delight, you enjoyed the escargot.”
Sandy smiled as she relived the experience.
I briefly made eye contact with the other dinner guests and with a twinkle in my eye and with much animation, said,
“This reminds me of a piece I just wrote for my forthcoming book. It is called ‘Fifty Shades of Grey for Prostate Cancer Treatment Survivors. “
“Would you like to hear it?”
Everyone, including my wife, chimed in with encouragement.

Forwards then backwards. . . .
Forward then backward. . . .
Again . . . .

Her heart was noticeably pounding now as was his . . . .
Her face was flushed . . . .
She moaned . . . .
softly at first, then began to groan louder . . . .

Finally . . . .
totally exhausted . . . .
